FAQ

Questions and answers

Still curious? Email info@appsgit.com.

Is there an open-source alternative to Square POS?

Yes. Open Source Point of Sale (OSPOS), NexoPOS, Odoo's Point of Sale app, ERPNext and Dolibarr's TakePOS module can all be self-hosted. You still need a payment terminal or processor for card payments; the POS software carries no license fee.

Is there an open-source restaurant POS?

URY is a restaurant system built on ERPNext with dine-in, takeaway and delivery orders and a kitchen display. Odoo's Restaurant add-on and the restaurant tables in OSPOS are simpler options.

Can an open-source POS work with receipt printers and barcode scanners?

Yes. These systems support barcodes and printed receipts. OSPOS keeps a supported-hardware list on its wiki, Lakasir can print to USB thermal printers from the browser, and NexoPOS offers a separate print server for ESC/POS printers.

Is Odoo free?

Yes. Odoo is open-source software released under the LGPL-3.0 license, so you can self-host it at no cost. You only pay for the server it runs on, and some projects also offer an optional paid cloud plan.

Can I self-host these POS systems with Docker?

Yes, 5 of the 7 picks. Odoo, ERPNext and Dolibarr publish Docker images, so you can run them on a VPS or home server with Docker Compose. The others install from their own packages or source; follow each project's install guide.
